Unlike so many memoir writers, the author does not exaggerate his role in a war or compliment himself. If the reader didn't know the background, he or she would find it hard to believe that Bidermann was an oft-decorated, five times wounded soldier. He served in a straight infantry division on the Eastern Front throughout the Russo-German War. Early in the memoir, he describes passing by a large German war cemetery from the Eastern Front of World War One. Perhaps it was a harbinger of things to come.This fellow was not in a flashy unit, but his well told story is valuable precisely for that reason. Extremely well written - must have been hell on earth fighting so far from home, supply & manpower problems - against overwhelming odds (the whole world). What struck me was the American support, very early in war, for the Soviets. German soldiers were very professional!
"In Deadly Combat" is one of the best first person books on WW2, and I have read a lot of them! Unlike other WW2 books such as, "The Forgotten Soldier," there is no question I my mind that Bidermann was there on the Eastern Front and served in the German Army in WW2. His description of the weapons and the action is vivid and believable. It may be tedious for some readers because of all of the detail, but for us that have an interest in WW2, its a great read.
I really enjoyed this book. The early parts of the book dealing with the author's part in a PAK crew were interesting. The book does seem to meander a little in the middle but the latter part of the book dealing with imprisonment is a redeeming feature. I didn't really empathise with Bidermann until the end of the book but felt satisfied when I reached the end. I would recommend the book, not as one of the very best dealing with the Eastern Front, but as a good book nonetheless.
I hope it is a real description of facts and not another attempt at making up another WW2 reality story. The book seems original and true, but I have seen several WW2 stories that were ghost written by people who were never there. It did keep my attention but when someone uses exact word for word statements from years ago I find it hard to believe. I would give this one credit as being original and authentic.
Biderman gets five stars simply for surviving the entire Russia campaign and internment in the dreaded Russian POW camps. There's no apologies from the author but there also is no glorification of the war effort. There is though, a lot of introspective on the cost as his friends died around him and Germany lay in ruin from allied bombing. There aren't many authentic first person accounts from the perspective of the German soldier. If you're a WWII buff then you'll definitely want this book on your short list.
This is an excellent memoir of a German solider fighting on the eastern front of WWII. The book does get a bit repetitive detailing how many Soviet assaults he and his companions stopped. It seems a bit unbelievable that the thin lines he was part of could withstand the numerous onslaughts by superior numbers, but the poor state of Soviet forces was a major factor in German battlefield successes. The very last part of the book covers his experience in the Soviet POW system, which is harrowing as well. Overall, a great read.
I found Lt Bidermann's accounts of the 132 Infantry Division and participation with the 436 Inf Regiment as informative as it was entertaining. I must admit I had little historical knowledge of the Wehrmacht on the Eastern front aside from Von Paulus' 6th Army in Stalingrad. I found this more personal "soldier's" account to be humanizing. As I began to understood their loyalties to Germany and to each other my respect for their professionalism grew.. My thoughts often drifted between Lt. Bidermann and his comrades; of the sacrifice that they had made and the anticipation of those yet to come. I came away with a deeper understanding of the bravery and commitment from originally fighting Bolsheviks to eventually attempting to protect Germany. From seemingly indefensible position in the Courland Pocket they managed the unthinkable against overwhelming odds. And as a Professional Soldier Bidermann seems to bear no ill will towards his adversaries on the field. Of course his dislike for political types regardless of nationality was entirely a different matter. . Excellent Read!
